SEO stands for search engine optimisation. In simple words, it means making your website easy for Google to understand, so that it shows your pages to people who are looking for what you offer.

How Google decides what to show

When someone types a search, Google looks for pages that:

  1. Answer the question clearly. Does this page really talk about what was searched?
  2. Are trustworthy. Do other websites link to it? Do customers leave good reviews?
  3. Work well. Does the page load fast and look good on a phone?

SEO is simply improving these three things.

A simple example

Imagine you run a tuition centre in Klang. If your website only says "Welcome to our centre", Google does not know what you teach or where you are. If it says "SPM Maths and Science tuition in Klang, small classes, weekday evenings", Google, and parents, understand immediately.

Five things you can do this week

  • Give every page one clear topic and a title that says it, like "Wedding Photography in Kuala Lumpur".
  • Write the way customers talk. Use the words they would type into Google.
  • Answer common questions on your site: prices, process, timing, location.
  • Make it fast on mobile. Compress big photos and remove things you do not need.
  • Set up your Google Business Profile so you appear on Google Maps.

What SEO is not

SEO is not a trick, and nobody can honestly promise "number one on Google". Be careful with anyone who does. Good SEO is steady, honest work: useful pages, a healthy website and a good reputation.

Measuring progress

Free tools like Google Search Console show which searches bring people to your site. Check them every month, see what is working, and improve one page at a time.
